Why is the Blessed Sacrament on a side altar?

It is the custom in a Cathedral to have the Blessed Sacrament reserved in a side altar and so it is required in the rubrics to have the Blessed Sacrament there for a Pontifical Mass. This custom allows the bishop to bow when he would otherwise be required to genuflect. He only genuflects during the Canon of the Mass when he has the altar to lean on and sacred ministers to assist him.
