How do we actively participate in the Mass?

One participates in the Mass by being personally conformed to Christ. This participation presupposed that one is baptized and in a state of grace since even if one exteriorly participates in Mass, they are unable to interiorly participate without the sanctifying grace to do so. The primary way to increase this participation according to the Council is through catechesis since one needs to first understand what is happening in order to pray the Mass.  Then, one needs to be mindful of what is being prayed in Mass by following the actions as best as they can.  Also, there is the missionary dimension of active participation. As Pope Benedict XVI has said, "The faithful need to be reminded that there can be no actuosa participatio in the sacred mysteries without an accompanying effort to participate actively in the life of the Church as a whole, including a missionary commitment to bring Christ's love into the life of society."
